Cicadas: love 'em or hate 'em?

I think the constant cicada serenade is a key part to late summer/early fall.

I love hearing the buzz and consider it part of the soundtrack to the season! I also think their molted shells are pretty cool to find here & there among my trees.

Cicadas can actually do quite a bit of damage to trees, young trees especially. The females cut slits in branches and lay eggs. I have never seen such damage but I know other states deal with large infestations some years.

I probably wouldn't enjoy their buzz if I had to put netting over all my trees to prevent cicada damage!

Are you with me on appreciating the summery cicada song or have you had tree damage from them? Or maybe the noise drives you crazy?
